ΒΥΖΑΝΤΙΝΕΣ ΣΠΟΥΔΕΣ : ΕΛΛΑΔΑ & ΚΟΣΜΟΣ
Το 2ο Συνέδριο του Δήμου Αθηναίων «Η Ελλάδα στον κόσμο: Βυζαντινές Σπουδές » θα διεξαχθεί στις 25, 26 και 27 Ιουνίου 2009 στην Αθήνα. Είναι το δεύτερο ενός Κύκλου Συνεδρίων με τον γενικό τίτλο « Η Ελλάδα στον Κόσμο» ( www.elladastonkosmo.gr ) που εγκαινίασε ο Δήμαρχος Αθηναίων κ. Νικήτας Κακλαμάνης.
Στόχος αυτού του Κύκλου Συνεδρίων - που διοργανώνεται με τη συνεργασία του Πολιτισμικού Οργανισμού του Δήμου Αθηναίων και του Οργανισμού Μεγάρου Μουσικής - είναι η προβολή και η πλαισίωση του επιστημονικού έργου που γίνεται ανά τον κόσμο για την Ελλάδα, η δικτύωση των αντίστοιχων επιστημόνων - Ελλήνων και μη - μεταξύ τους και η εκπόνηση ενός τριετούς προγράμματος δράσης που να αφορά τον εκάστοτε τομέα σπουδών που θα είναι και το αντικείμενο του συνεδρίου.
Οι στόχοι και το πρόγραμμα δράσης που θα προκύπτουν από κάθε συνέδριο θα αξιολογούνται ανά τριετία ούτως ώστε να εξετάζεται η πρόοδος που έχει συντελεστεί προς την κατεύθυνση που θα έχει προκύψει από το συνέδριο.

Σεμινάρια ιστορικής βιβλιοδεσίας στην Πάτμο
Εργαστήριο συντήρησης χειρογράφων και βιβλίων Μονής Αγίου Ιωάννη του Θεολόγου
Το Εργαστήριο συντήρησης χειρογράφων και βιβλίων της Μονής του Αγίου Ιωάννη του Θεολόγου στην Πάτμο διοργανώνει από το 2006 καλοκαιρινούς κύκλους σεμιναρίων με θέματα που αφορούν τη συντήρηση και τη μελέτη ιστορικών βιβλιοδεσιών. Στόχος των σεμιναρίων είναι η λειτουργία του εργαστηρίου συντήρησης βιβλίων και χειρογράφων καθώς και της βιβλιοθήκης της Μονής ως εκπαιδευτικού φορέα και πόλου έλξης συντηρητών βιβλίων, παλαιογράφων και βιβλιοθηκονόμων απ’ όλο τον κόσμο, αλλά και η προαγωγή της έρευνας στο πεδίο της ιστορικής βιβλιοδεσίας.
Το εργαστήριο διοργανώνει τέσσερα πενθήμερα εκπαιδευτικά σεμινάρια την περίοδο 31 Αυγούστου-25 Σεπτεμβρίου 2009, στην Πάτμο.

Xenophon: Ethical principle and historical enquiry

Among classical authors Xenophon’s output is uniquely marked by his life experience and the range of its engagement with the important historical themes of his era: indeed it plays a special role in defining our sense of the post-Athenian-Empire world. His formative experiences and comparative deracination gave him an outlook not limited by the mental boundaries of the classic Greek polis. The result was a distinctive but intellectually and morally consistent response to the histoire événementielle of his times and to the underlying issue of ethical but effective leadership, and an oeuvre that is a remarkable witness to the intellectual and cultural environment of mid- to late-Classical Greece.
Three decades of scholarship have established the general truth of these claims, but a number of important tasks remain. We note two in particular. First, we need to find the right way to describe a voice that is neither simply ironic nor simply ingenuous, to demonstrate its presence throughout his disparate oeuvre and to show that it articulates a serious, principled and rational, if also optimistic, response to the problems of fourth-century Greece. Secondly, we need to stress and celebrate the extent to which his work is informed by an engagement with history. Xenophon is concerned with effective action in the here-and-now, but his characteristic investigative and expository strategy is discourse about the past. Much of the history is fictive –sitting awkwardly (for modern taste) between truth and falsehood – but he is driven by a basic belief that understanding how the world is and should be involves contemplating how it has been. The cross-oeuvre ramifications of this historical mentality are still not fully appreciated.
It is the aim of the conference to advance these tasks The project builds on the success of the 1999 World of Xenophon conference and reflects a Liverpool research profile in which the interaction of ancient historiography with broader cultural and intellectual issues is a major general theme and three individual scholars have a primary research interest in Xenophon and his late Classical world. By contrast with recent meetings devoted to particular aspects of Xenophon’s output, this conference reinstates the aim of addressing as much of that output as possible. This is done in the belief that intensive face-to-face discussion of numerous individual studies of ethical, political, economic, literary, ethnographic, historical and historiographical issues is the best way to identify and articulate the cross-oeuvre connections and consistencies that are needed to crystallize a more accurate picture of Xenophon’s mind-set and its significance for historians of classical Greece. It is crucial that all papers will be pre-circulated and the formal sessions entirely devoted to discussion, maximizing the academic value of the gathering and allowing us to include new research from a very large number of scholars. That few were participants in the 1999 meeting is also a vital fact: the project’s aims will be addressed by a fresh cross-section of Xenophon-watchers and this offers an excellent chance of genuinely new and important results.

Inscriptions and their Uses in Ancient Literature

Inscribing written documents on permanent media such as bronze and stone was among the most distinctive and enduring practices of Greek and Roman antiquity. The extant material evidence of inscriptions offers a huge body of material with which to investigate the ancient deployment of the written word in both public and private contexts. But it provides only part of the evidence: ancient Greek and Latin literary texts also offer insight into the deployment and interpretation of inscriptions. Ancient literary authors, both poets and prose-writers, discussed and quoted inscriptions (both real and imaginary) as ornamental devices; as alternative voices to that of the narrator; to display scholarship; to make points about history, politics and morality; and for a whole range of other reasons.
This conference aims to explore the possibilities which the literary record of ancient inscriptions offer both to those interested in understanding ancient attitudes towards inscriptions and to those interested in exploring the broader relationship (and overlaps) between epigraphical and non-epigraphical modes of expression from a range of literary, historical and epigraphical angles.

Inscribing written documents on permanent media such as bronze and stone was among the most distinctive and enduring practices of Greek and Roman antiquity. The extant material evidence of inscriptions offers a huge body of material with which to investigate the ancient deployment of the written word in both public and private contexts. But it provides only part of the evidence: ancient Greek and Latin literary texts also offer insight into the deployment and interpretation of inscriptions. Ancient literary authors, both poets and prose-writers, discussed and quoted inscriptions (both real and imaginary) as ornamental devices; as alternative voices to that of the narrator; to display scholarship; to make points about history, politics and morality; and for a whole range of other reasons.
This conference aims to explore the possibilities which the literary record of ancient inscriptions offer both to those interested in understanding ancient attitudes towards inscriptions and to those interested in exploring the broader relationship (and overlaps) between epigraphical and non-epigraphical modes of expression from a range of literary, historical and epigraphical angles.

Θεματική έκθεση στο πλαίσιο της Διεθνούς Έκθεσης Βιβλίου της Θεσσαλονίκης, καθώς παρατηρείται η αναζωπύρωση του ενδιαφέροντος του αναγνωστικού κοινού για βιβλία που αφορούν την Ιστορία ή αναφέρονται στην Ιστορία.
Η θεματική έκθεση βιβλίων θα ξεπεράσει τους 1.000 τίτλους, και χωρίζεται σε 11 ενότητες: Θεωρία και ιστοριογραφία της Ιστορίας, Ιστορία και μακρά διάρκεια, Προϊστορική περίοδος, Αρχαιότητα, Μεσαιωνικοί χρόνοι/Βυζάντιο, Πρώιμοι νεώτεροι χρόνοι (Οθωμανική Αυτοκρατορία/Τουρκοκρατία), Νεώτεροι χρόνοι (Γαλλική Επανάσταση, Σύσταση του ελληνικού κράτους έως τέλος του Β’ Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου), Σύγχρονη Ιστορία, Βιογραφίες-Μαρτυρίες, Ιστορικό mυθιστόρημα, Γενικά βιβλία Ιστορίας.
Η θεματική έκθεση «Βιβλίο και Ιστορία» περιλαμβάνει επίσης παρουσιάσεις βιβλίων και συζητήσεις μεταξύ ιστορικών-συγγραφέων (μέχρι στιγμής έχουν επιβεβαίωσει την παρουσία τους οι Paolo Cesaretti και Howard Zinn).
Πρόκειται να προβληθούν ντοκιμαντέρ προερχόμενα από την ΕΡΤ, τον ΣΚΑΪ, το Εθνικό Οπτικοακουστικό Αρχείο και σκηνοθέτες (Φώτος Λαμπρινός).
Ειδικά για τους Βαλκανικούς Πολέμους, οργανώνεται έκθεση εικαστικών έργων με θέμα την ελληνική εποποιΐα αυτή την περίοδο από το ΕΛΙΑ,καθώς και σπάνια βιβλία και χειρόγραφα προερχόμενα από το Μουσείο Μπενάκη.
